PRESS RELEASE ON THE RESPONSES TO AND THE ATMOSPHERE OCCASIONED BY THE EXPULSION OF THE HON. VICE PRESIDENT, CHIEF SAMUEL SAM-SUMANA, FROM THE ALL PEOPLES CONGRESS PARTY

DATE: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 2015

As a statutory institution established with the mission of creating an enlightened, peaceful, democratic and just society in which the citizens are empowered to enjoy their civil and human rights and discharge their responsibilities with an attitude conducive to national unity and development and coupled with the fact that as a moral guarantor of the nation’s peace, the National Commission for Democracy is deeply concerned about the unsavory atmosphere occasioned by the expulsion from the All Peoples Congress party the Hon. Vice President, Chief Samuel Sam-Sumana, on Friday, March 6, 2015.

The said unsavory atmosphere is characterized by the use of unprintable invectives especially on the social media with the potential of creating unnecessary rancor and hatred among the general populace and as such affecting the peace and general wellbeing of the nation. Additionally, the atmosphere is characterized by evident incitement and the pitching of tents for the purpose of polarizing the discourse with dire consequences on the peace and stability of the nation.

In so far as the Commission is not going to interfere with the internal political dynamics of the All Peoples Congress and other political parties or groupings in the country, the Commission wishes to draw attention to the fact that every institution has the responsibility of maintaining, as it is also the duty of every Sierra Leonean to maintain, the peace and avoid any situation that has the potential of plunging the nation into the dark abyss of regrettable chaos. Such a possibility should remind us about the dark days of the civil war in our beloved motherland with untold suffering and mayhem that the nation has not fully recovered from. It then becomes the moral responsibility of every institution in this nation and by extension every Sierra Leonean to behave within the ambit of the law and allow the due processes to be effected to ensure that the nation is not strangulated any further by actions deliberate or inadvertent.

At a time like this, the Commission wishes to remind every Sierra Leonean that the nation is still battling with the Ebola scourge and as such needs undivided attention to bring that fight to a logical end. It is the reasoned view of the Commission that the Ebola fight itself is enormous even as we consider the fact that almost everything is hinged on the end of the Ebola epidemic and as such everything should be done to end this sad chapter of our nation’s history rather than starting wars from many fronts as a nation and as a people.

In view of the prevailing circumstances, the Commission is calling on all Sierra Leoneans regardless of whatever the affiliation is to remain calm, see beyond the now, be law abiding and contribute to the rebuilding of the nation from the wreckage of the Ebola scourge.  Let all be reminded that Sierra Leone as an entity is bigger than any institution or individual and as such the common loyalty should be to the state as we lift the Green, White and Blue sky high  and not allow any parochial interest to sway us from the common good
